John teaches us what the evidence is for distinguishing between children of God and children of the devil, giving us a moral test for authentic Christianity. John breaks this down into three parts:
1. Sin is Serious,
2. Messiah’s Mission, and
3. Christianity Check.
He repeats this sequence twice in the passage to drive home the moral test.
